Halal

Tracking Halal labels across Berlin streets.

Halal refers to the term "permissible" which means that the product follows Islamic guidelines and rules.

The proliferation of Halal logos in Berlin is closely tied to the growing Muslim community in the city.

The presence of numerous Muslim communities in Germany can be attributed to factors such as labor shortages, wartime conditions, and immigration.

Consequently, the accessibility of Halal food and beverages in Berlin is steadily increasing. However, this trend also brings about noticeable changes in the dynamics of urban spaces, with certain neighborhoods becoming more exclusive for immigrant families.

Through this ongoing series, I aim to document the prevalence of Halal labels in Berlin, exploring the complex interplay between economic factors and the demands of the people, as well as the evolving dynamics of urban spaces and the challenges of social integration.
